About La Thuile

La Thuile is a commune in northern Italy and part of the autonomous Aosta Valley.

La Thuile is located in the Alps, at an altitude of 1,450 m (4,760 ft), close to the French alpine town of La Rosière.

The town is crossed by the road going from Pré-Saint-Didier in the north-west up to the Little St Bernard Pass in the south-east linking Italy to Bourg-Saint-Maurice and the Isère Valley in France.

La Thuile is connected to Chamonix via the Mont Blanc tunnel.

Skiing in La Thuile

La Thuile is part of the Espace San Bernardo ski area with access to 160km of downhill skiing, with 77 marked pistes, served by a total of 37 ski lifts. In addition to the skiing in La Thuile itself, the ski Lift Pass will allow you to ski or snowboard also in the ski resort of La Rosière.

La Thuile is a great choice for all standards of skiers with the advantage to take part to a relaxing après ski atmosphere.

The longest intermediate run is the 11km long San Bernardo, a relaxing journey of discovery, where one can link up to several restaurants and après ski bars on the way down to La Thuile.

The majority of pistes in La Thuile are blue and red, therefore La Thuile is best suited for intermediate skiers. 

Advanced skiers will definitely enjoy venturing off-piste or backcountry in the Vallée Blanche.

There is also a beginner ski area named Les Suches, at the top of the Entreves cable car, where one can find a magic carpet and easy long runs with plenty of mountain huts.

As well as alpine skiing it is possible to go snowboarding, nordic skiing, heli-skiing or simply enjoy the tranquillity of the forests with a pair of snowshoes.

 

The Chanousia Alpine Botanical Garden

The Chanousia Alpine Botanical Garden, the highest in Europe,is located at 2170 meters altitude at the Little St Bernard Pass, in the commune of La Thuile.

Today the garden contains about 1200 species of alpine flowers and plants which flourish in a short growing time, between heavy winters with snowfall ranging from 4-8 meters.

Chanousia is accredited by the University of Turin as a work placement venue.

The botanical gardens are open to the public in summer.

Rutor Waterfalls

For walking lovers, one of the most magnificent natural wonders around La Thuile is the Rutor glacier which dominates the valley.  

Also The Rutor glacier is set apart by its waterfalls, some of the most beautiful in the Aosta Valley.

The Rutor glacier is huge, covering a surface area of 8.4 km2. The wide cap at the top is at an altitude of 3,486 m, but the glacier extends down to 2,500 m, where its runoff feeds several lakes.

Three magnificent falls rush down the mountainside and give rise to the Dora River, and the best views are to be had from the bridge across the lowest fall. One can get to the falls on foot from below, from the La Joux fraction (1,603 m) or above from the Deffeyes refuge situated at the foot of the Rutor glacier. It is also possible to continue the walk to reach the lakes at Bellacomba.

Expert mountaineers can continue upwards to the Rutor summit, but there are available many other guided itineraries for adults and children 

Rafting at La Thuile

In summer it is possible to go rafting on the Dora River, from La Thuile one can descend on a rubber tyre whilst enjoying and admiring the splendid scenery.

Riding the waves is the most exciting, discovering La Thuile village from a different perspective, admiring the lush vegetation and the magnificent gorges at the feet of Mont Blanc massif.

La Thuile has been the venue for several major annual international winter conferences:

Les Rencontres de Physique de la Vallée d'Aoste: event organized by Italy's Institute of Nuclear Physics.

Rencontres de Moriond: event organized by the French National institute of nuclear and particle physics (IN2P3).

Alpine Ski World Cup female : in 2016 the slopes of La Thuile hosted,for the first time in history three competitions (two downhill and one super G).
